Q: Where did you grow up, and where do you live now?
A: I grew up in Kalamazoo, Michigan but have also lived in Oklahoma, which was no fun at all. Currently, I'm loving life in Houston, even if it's approximately 500 ft from the sun. Ideally, I'd love to live in a city with a walking culture and I'm always trying to find ways to travel abroad.
Q: What have you studied, and what are you doing now?
A: I am currently beginning my Doctoral dissertation on gender violence in Francophone African and Caribbean literature, film, and theory. I obtained my MA in Continental African literature in 2010 and am excited about the prospect of having "Dr." at the beginning of my name. ;)
Q: Links to your style networks?
A: I'm still fairly new to style networking since I have been hanging out in the Ivory Tower and kept fashion pursuits largely to myself. However, I'm finding new ways to connect with people primarily through Instagram, Twitter, and my "academic fashion" blog - academiquechic.com.
Q: How would you describe your personal style in 3-5 words?
A: Minimalist, chic, elegant, effortless
Q: If you had $300 for a shopping spree, how many items would you buy?
A: Most likely a minimalist dress or jumpsuit and clutch to get a complete, effortless ensemble for the price.
Q: What do you splurge on? Skimp on?
A: I typically splurge on key, staple pieces that make or break an ensemble like a perfect fitting pair of black pants, a tailored blazer, a luxe handbag, a midi-length dress, and striking - but comfortable - heels. I tend to skimp on accessories since I like minimalist looks and don't bother too much with jewelry in the mornings.
Q: Who are your favorite style icon(s)?
A: I grew up watching style icons from various decades like Dorothy Lamour, Sophia Loren, Jane Russell, Milla Jovovich, and Linda Evangelista. I love strikingly beautiful, strong women.
Q: What are your favorite fashion blogs? Magazines?
A: Currently I'm loving Be Frassy, A Minute Away From Snowing, Beige Renegade, Micah Gianneli, and Weronika Dali's "Dalighted" blog.
Q: What do you love about fashion? Not love?
A: I love European-style fashion due to its focus on neutral colors and impeccable tailoring. With this style, monochromatic looks avoid appearing boring and you can highlight your best bodily and facial features. I tend to avoid Bohemian looks, graphic tees, and anything that looks too overdone.
Q: Your favorite designers & brands?
A: Zara, Helmut Lang, Mango, H&M, Topshop, YSL, Prada
Q: Do you have any fashion rules when putting an outfit together?
A: Any ensemble must appear effortlessly chic and make my face the focal point of the look.
Q: What is your dream job?
A: That's a big question. At the moment, that would probably be a university professor, but I could see myself doing something with fashion in the future.
Q: What are your other interests? How do you spend your spare time?
A: I speak French, so I love meeting other Francophones and Francophiles. I also enjoy reading, hanging out with family, and browsing for new ensemble pieces.
